Is it Time to Refinish Your Denver Hardwood Floor?

Hardwood floors have a timeless look and are a great asset to your home. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to tell when they need to be refinished. With age, hardwood floors actually get better. A good wood floor can last up to 100 years! However, they do need to be refinished from time to time to maintain their luster. Below are two easy ways to test your floor to find out if it needs to be refinished:
  1. Find the section of your floor that gets the most foot traffic and pour a teaspoon of water on the floor. If the water forms into beads, the condition of the finish is perfectly fine. If the water slowly penetrates the floor, it may be fine to put off refinishing for now, but it’s a sign that it should be refinished in the near future. If the water soaks into the floor and leaves a dark spot, then it’s definitely time for refinishing as soon as possible. Repeat this test on other parts of the floor that show signs of wear.

  1. Since some floors can be very thin, they can only withstand being sanded once or twice. This means there is a low margin for error and that they need to be sanded and refinished delicately.  To measure your floor’s depth, find two floorboards that don’t meet perfectly. Put a business card in the groove and measure its depth by marking where the top of the groove meets the business card. If the mark on the card is less than ¾” from the edge, make sure your floor is refinished with extra care.
